Located 14 miles south of Castillo de San Marcos, Fort Matanzas was constructed from 1740 to 1742. Used to block the southern route to St. Augustine, the fort consisted of a tower to view approaching vessels and a cannon to fend them off. The fort is accessed by a public ferry.
